The Importance of Setting Regular Money Dates to Review Your Finances
When was the last time you checked in with your finances? If your answer is "I’m not sure" or "not as often as I should," you’re not alone. Life gets busy, and money management can sometimes take a backseat. But setting up regular money dates can transform your financial life, helping you stay in control, reduce stress, and align your spending with your goals.
What is a Money Date?
A money date (or as we like to call it, a “wealth ritual”) is a dedicated time to review your finances, assess your spending, check in on your goals, and make necessary adjustments. Think of it as a self-care ritual for your financial well-being…because just like your health, your financial wellness requires attention and maintenance.
How Often Should You Have a Money Date?
Ideally, you should check in with your finances at least once a month, but weekly money dates can be even more beneficial. A quick weekly review can help you stay on track and avoid any surprises. The key is consistency — set a calendar reminder and commit to showing up for yourself.
Personally? I do a quick scan of credit card transactions on a weekly basis, a monthly budget and investment review, and a quarterly net worth update.
What to Include in Your Money Date
Review Your Expenses: Look at your bank and credit card statements to see where your money is going. Are there any subscriptions you forgot about? Are you overspending in certain categories?
Check Your Budget: Compare your actual spending to your budget. Are you within your limits, or do you need to adjust for the upcoming month?
Track Your Income: Make sure all expected income has been received and plan for any upcoming changes.
Assess Your Savings & Investments: Are you making progress toward your emergency fund, retirement, or other financial goals? Do you need to increase or adjust contributions?
Pay Bills & Avoid Late Fees: Ensure all payments are scheduled and set up automatic payments when possible.
Debt Check-In: Review your debt repayment progress. If you’re paying down loans or credit cards, are you sticking to your strategy?
Celebrate Wins & Adjust Goals: Acknowledge your progress, no matter how small! If things didn’t go as planned, adjust your strategy without guilt. Remember, this is about learning and improving.
How to Make Money Dates Enjoyable
Money dates don’t have to be stressful or boring. Make them something to look forward to by setting the right atmosphere:
Light candles, put on relaxing music, or pour yourself a glass of wine, tea or favorite beverage. Maybe you even get take-out from your favorite restaurant!
Choose a time that works best for you — whether it’s a peaceful early morning session or a cozy evening check-in.
Get comfortable with a notebook, spreadsheet or financial tracking app to jot down thoughts and goals.
If you have a partner, make it a shared experience to align your financial goals together.
Why Money Dates Matter
Keeps You Accountable: Regular check-ins prevent financial avoidance and help you stay proactive.
Reduces Financial Stress: When you’re aware of your financial situation, you feel more in control.
Helps You Reach Your Goals Faster: Tracking progress ensures you stay aligned with your long-term financial aspirations.
Prevents Overspending: A regular review of your expenses helps you make adjustments before small leaks turn into big problems.
Builds a Positive Relationship with Money: The more time you spend managing your money, the more confident and empowered you’ll feel.
